Most people know Gmail for its clean interface and useful features like search operators and add-ons. But you can also use Gmail for more: Gmail SMTP server.
What Is The Gmail Smtp Server Address
With Gmail SMTP Server, you will be able to send email from your Gmail account using other email clients such as Outlook or Thunderbird. But more importantly, you can also use Gmail’s SMTP server to send emails from your WordPress site. for free!
Use 2 Step Verification To Send Emails With Gmail
This is a really great way to make your WordPress site’s email more reliable without having to spend money on a dedicated email service. Gmail allows you to send up to 500 emails per day; this is more than enough for the vast majority of WordPress sites.
There are also some other common (but not universal) Gmail SMTP settings that you can find when trying to set things up. Here’s how to answer them if you come across them:

As detailed above, the default server address is smtp.gmail.com. You can sign in using your full Gmail email address and Google password.
G Suite (gmail For Business) Email Setup
Yes! You can do. If you use other email clients such as Thunderbird or Outlook, you can use your Gmail SMTP server details to continue sending emails through your Gmail account.
However, please note that SMTP is only for sending email. If you also want to receive email to your Gmail account in another email client, you must use POP3 or IMAP. You can find these settings by opening your Gmail settings and going to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
Also yes! WordPress, password reset, notifications, etc. It sends many basic transactional emails for things, and you can deliver all these emails using the Gmail SMTP server.
With just a free Gmail account, you’ll be able to send up to 500 emails per day; this is much more than the limitations imposed by other free SMTP servers.
Why Won’t My Gmail Smtp Settings Work?
If you have a paid Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) account, Google will further increase your limit and allow you to send up to 2,000 emails per day. You’ll also be able to send email from your own custom domain name instead of your Gmail address. That is, you can send with [email protected] instead of [email protected]. To do this, you must also create Google Workspace MX records to associate your Google Workspace account with the custom domain.
Note: Technically, sending limits are not “daily”. Instead, the restrictions apply to a “24 hour period”. For example, you can’t send 500 emails at 11:59 PM on Monday and then another 500 emails at 12:01 AM on Tuesday.
Yes! You can use the SMTP server even if you have two-factor authentication enabled on your Google account. However, you must create an app password so that the app can still connect.
However, we do not recommend using this approach if you want to use Gmail’s SMTP server to send your WordPress site’s emails. Instead, you should use the Gmail API method, which we’ll cover in detail in the next tutorial. This allows you to send email using the Gmail API instead of just entering the SMTP server details, and this also has the advantage of avoiding two-factor authentication issues.
How To Set Up A Gmail Outgoing Smtp Server
Now let’s see how you can use Gmail SMTP server to send transactional emails of your WordPress site for free. This method works great and will increase the credibility of your site’s emails compared to the default PHP mail method.
To set this up, you need to create a Google app so that you can connect to the Gmail SMTP server via the API instead of just including the SMTP details. Many steps have been taken to do this. This is only a one-time installation process. So when you take 30-60 minutes to do this setup, your site will still benefit from autopilot.
In addition to building a Google app, you’ll also need the help of a WordPress SMTP plugin. We’ll be using the free Post SMTP Mailer/Email Log plugin, but the free WP Mail SMTP plugin is another good option that also supports the Gmail API.
Note – This guide is focused on using a free Gmail account. However, you can follow a similar process to configure your site to send email through your Google Workspace (G Suite) account.
Setup Gmail As Smtp
To get started, you need to install and activate the free SMTP Mail/Email Login plugin from WordPress.org. This allows you to configure your WordPress site to send email via the Gmail API/SMTP server.
Once you’ve activated the plugin, go to the Post SMTP tab in your WordPress dashboard and click the Show All Settings link below the big launch wizard button.
Next, go to the Message tab and set your email address and “from” name. You can use your Gmail address as the “From” email, or you can use another email address if you prefer.
Next, go back to the Account tab and select Gmail API from the Type drop-down menu. After making this selection, you should see some additional options in the authentication field below. Leave this page open as you will need authorized JavaScript resources and authorized redirect URIs in the next step:
N Ip Intercom
Now you need to create a Google app. This is what allows your WordPress site to securely send email through the Gmail API. Again, this is definitely the most complicated part of this process. However, it’s basically just a lot of button clicks and we’ll give you all the steps/screenshots to get there.
To get started, open a new tab and copy this URL to go to the Google Developers Console. There you need to create a new project. If this is your first time logging into the Developers Console, Google will prompt you to create your first project. Or if you already have some projects, you can create a new project by clicking on the drop-down menu in the upper left corner (marked with [1] in the image below).
You should now be in the dedicated Gmail API interface. Click the button to create credentials:
Now Google will ask you to create a confirmation screen. This is the same type of authorization screen you see when you use Google to register/sign in to a site.
Step By Step Guide On How To Configure Your Own Smtp Server
You need to do this to meet Google’s requirements, but you don’t need to worry about the information you enter because you’ll only use it for your own WordPress site.
This should open a new tab where you can configure the OAuth confirmation screen (keep the original browser tab handy, as you’ll need to come back in a second). Under User Type, select External. Then click Create:
On the next screen, enter the basic details for your site. Again, you don’t have to worry about what you enter here because the only person who will see this information is you.
Now go back to the tab containing the Add Credentials tab in your project interface and enter the following information:
How To Set Up Smtp Custom Email
Click Refresh after adding everything. Then the Refresh button should change to Generate OAuth Client ID – click that to complete the process, then click Done.

When you click Done, you should see a section for OAuth 2.0 Client IDs in the Credentials tab of your project (it will open automatically after you click Done).
To complete the installation, go back to the Post SMTP Mailer/Email Log settings in your WordPress dashboard and paste the Client ID and Client Secret from the previous step. Then be sure to save your changes:
Gmail Smtp For Sending Emails Appearantly Not Working Anymore
Clicking on this link will open the normal Google authorization process (again, just like signing into a website using a Google login). However, since you haven’t submitted your app to Google for review, Google will show you a “This app has not been verified” warning.
Since this is your own app, you can safely ignore the warning. Click on the option to show advanced settings, then go to the “yourwebsite.com” link (not secure) to continue the authorization process:
You will now go through the normal process. Be sure to select Allow your WordPress site to access your Gmail account. Gmail needs these permissions to send email through an SMTP server.
To make sure everything works, Post SMTP Mailer/Email Log includes an option to send a test email. You can access this from the main settings page:
Free Smtp Server
Your WordPress site will now send all of its emails using the Gmail SMTP server. You can make sure this happens by going to Send SMTP → Email Log. This will list all the emails your site has sent (with errors if the plugin is having problems):
