Transfer Your Domain To Godaddy

Transfer Your Domain To Godaddy – I’m thinking about transferring my domain from GoDaddy. I have been using GoDaddy for many years (including GoDaddy Pro). My two domains will continue this month. I think this is a great opportunity to get through this process. In this post, I explain how I transferred my personal website domain (this site) to Google Domains.

I have seen 3 or 4 different versions of the UI and their menus over the past few years. It’s too complicated / too crowded / too narrow. To do the most common thing, you have to go through several steps. And usually key functions (like DNS management) are buried deep in the menu.

Another problem is that GoDaddy is well known even to long time customers. I understand, sales and promotion are normal. But I am not here to buy new things every time I log into my account and browse around to “do things”.

Finally “GoDaddy Pro”. Without going into details, the boring experience is very slow, too many changes in the user interface and frequent changes between personal and customer accounts. Also, it is good to get points when you buy products for your customers. But I never got those points (not that I think, but it’s crazy to get a reward for something and your account still shows 0 points)!

Now to give them some credit for their UI, they have greatly improved it. But still it is not for me.

I have seen and heard of other domain registrations over the years. But none of them were attractive enough for me to get through that.

As a Microsoft Azure customer, they now have the most convenient domain registration service in the Azure Portal. But it is not a specific domain registration service. It is buried under the Software Services menu (it makes sense). And I believe they partner with GoDaddy for this service (there is nothing wrong with that. I know their SSL certificate is from GoDaddy).

How To Push A Domain To Another Godaddy Account

When I saw Google Domains, it was my first love! These are Google reasons why there is good. For me, privacy protection [comes with] [free] email forwarding and [enjoyable] add-ons (like free websites with Google Sites or Blogger) are the highlight of this offer. What may not be clear is that I use so many other Google services (email drive, you name it!) How great it is to be able to use the same account and manage my domain as well ?!

To transfer your domain to Google, go to Google Domains. On the left side you will see an option to “Transfer”.

Enter the domain you want to transfer to and you will see instructions on how to transfer the domain immediately. The instructions are clear. In my case, I had to unlock my domain and then enter the authorization code.

How To Close Godaddy Account

Once you have entered the authorization code back in the Google Domain Transfer section, you will see your current domain settings on GoDaddy displayed to you. In my case, I use a custom DNS setting for this domain (second option). But as you can see in the image below, you can copy your DNS record (even edit it) during the transfer (cap off to PM / who requested this function. Really easy)

And last but not least, the headline made you read this article. But you are not ready yet. Check your email that you have on file with GoDaddy. An email with instructions on what to do to speed up domain transfer:

And that’s it. You did the whole process for me in 5 minutes. I expect some resistance from GoDaddy. But it’s very smooth (thanks GoDaddy). Open the Domain Transfer page and type in your domain name to see if it has permission to transfer. See the picture below. You can proceed to step 2 if it is transferable.

As you can see in the picture above. We have 3 things to do at Godaddy. Disabling registrar lock (also known as domain lock) Disabling privacy protection if you have it and get an authorization code.

Domain transfer takes about 5 to 7 days. If you want your domain to start working with your new provider sooner, you can first change the nameservers to the new host before starting the transfer. Once the transfer has started, the name server, DNS records and domain contact information can only be changed once the transfer is complete.

You can request a domain transfer code while the domain is locked, but the domain must be unlocked to complete the transfer.

If you did not receive the email, make sure the email address registered for your domain is correct. Your account email address may be different from the email address associated with your domain. You can request additional codes by clicking the Get Authorization Code button in the previous screenshot.

Once you have the authorization code, go to your website, register your new one and start transferring. This process will include providing them with an authorization code that you should receive via email.

Domain Migration From Godaddy Fails

Do not give up your domain at any point in the process. If you cancel the domain, you will immediately cease ownership and the transfer will fail. Once the transfer is complete, we will automatically delete the update from your account.

If you want to stop the domain transfer, go back to the Advanced Options section in Step 1 and click on the Transfer Toggle button. You will see a message in the upper right corner of the screen stating that your domain is now locked. This will re-lock your domain and cancel the domain transfer. If possible, re-enable privacy protection.

What if my new registrar says they can’t start my transfer because my contact details are not public?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on 25 May 2018. This law prohibits registrants from sharing or disseminating public registration contact information to multiple registrants. As a result, most registrants have implemented a GDPR-compliant process so they can process transfers without requiring registrar information to be made public. If your new registrant still requires your contact information to be made public in the WHOIS, they should have a GDPR compliant process instead. You can ask them to go through the received FOA (form of authorization) and use the EPP code or authorization to initiate the transfer.

Transfer Domain Host From Godaddy To Google Domains

You may also want to share this ICANN policy document with your new registrant. Annex G of ICANN Provisional Provisions is a recent change to the migration policy due to the GDPR. This means that if the registrar is unable to obtain contact information of the registrant from the WHOIS public, they are not required to send an Authorization Form (FOA) email. They can go through the FOA and get the authorization / EPP code and then send the transfer to the registry.

At this point, most large registrars operate in compliance with the GDPR. However, we do know of some small impressions that do not exist. Please contact your new Registration Assistant for assistance as this may be a problem with their operation.
