Transfer My Domain To Godaddy – I am considering transferring my domain from GoDaddy. I have been using GoDaddy services for years (including GoDaddy Pro). Both of my domains are up for renewal this month. I think it’s a good opportunity to go through this process. This post explains how to transfer my own website domain (this site) to Google Domains.
I’ve seen 3 or 4 different versions of the UI and menu over the years. It’s too complicated to do the simplest thing. You have to go through several steps. Usually important features (like DNS management) are buried deep in the menu.

Another problem is that GoDaddy is very upselling even long-time customers. I know promotion and sales are normal. But I’m not here to buy new stuff every time I log into my account and go to “make stuff”.

Finally, “GoDaddy Pro”. without going into detail; It was quite a disappointing experience. too slow; Too many UI changes and frequent switching between personal and client accounts. In addition, It’s great to earn points when you buy products for your customers. But I never got those points (I don’t care, but it still shows 0 points because it’s crazy to win an award!).
Now to compliment the UI; They have improved a lot. Not for me though.
I have seen and heard of many other Domain Registers over the years. But it wasn’t attractive enough to overcome the transfer hurdle.
As a Microsoft Azure customer, you now have access to a very easy domain registration service in the Azure Portal. But it is not a separate domain registration service. It’s embedded in the App Services menu (useless). And I believe they partnered with GoDaddy for this service (that’s not wrong. I know the SSL certificate comes from GoDaddy).
How To Authenticate A Domain With Godaddy
When I saw Google Domains, it was love at first sight. This is Google’s reason for something good. for me privacy protection [built in]; Email Forwarding [Free]; and [have] add-ons (like Google sites or Blogger free sites) are the main points of the offer. Many other Google services (email, Drive, you name it). It would be nice to be able to manage my domain too using the same account.
Go to Google Domains to transfer your domain to Google. On the left side you will find an option for “Transfer”.
Enter the domain you want to transfer and you will immediately see step-by-step instructions to transfer the domain. The instructions are pretty clear. In my case, I have to unlock my domain first and then enter the authorization code.
To obtain an authorization key from GoDaddy; You need to go to the domain settings page and you can find the link at the bottom of the page:
Google Domains Vs Godaddy: Where To Register Your Domain?
After entering the authorization code again in the Google domain transfer section, You can see that you will be shown the current GoDaddy domain settings. In my case, I used custom DNS settings for this domain (second option). But as you can see, In the picture below, You can copy DNS records (and edit them) during transfer (hats off to the PM/hats who proposed this feature, very handy)
Finally, Don’t forget to select privacy and protection options and automatic updates. But you’re not done yet. Check the email on file with GoDaddy. There is an email with instructions on what to do to expedite the domain transfer.
That’s it. finish. The whole process took only 5 minutes for me. I expect some resistance on GoDaddy’s part. But it’s pretty smooth (thanks GoDaddy). This guide explains how to transfer a registered domain to another provider (known as a registrar).
Note that your domain must be at least 60 days old before you can transfer it. If it’s a new domain, You can change the name server.
How To Transfer Domain From Godaddy To Siteground
Domain transfer takes about 5-7 days to complete. If you want your domain to work faster with a new provider, You can change the name server to a new host before starting the transfer. Once the transfer has started, name servers; DNS records and domain contact details can only be changed after the transfer.
You can request a domain transfer code when the domain is locked, but the domain must be unlocked to complete the transfer.
If you do not receive an email, Make sure the email address on file for your domain is correct. Your account email may differ from the email address associated with your domain. You can request another code by clicking the Get authorization code button in the previous image.
Once you have the authorization code, Go to the new registrar’s site and start the transfer. This process will involve providing you with an authorization code, which you should receive via email.

After confirming the transfer, The waiting period is five days. During this period you will receive an email to confirm or cancel the transfer. After you confirm, The domain will be transferred within five days.
Do not cancel your domain at any point in this process. If you cancel the domain You will immediately cease to be the owner and the transfer will not be successful. Once the transfer is complete, We will automatically remove the upgrade from your account.
If you want to stop the domain transfer, go back to the Advanced Options section in step 1 and click the Transfer lock toggle button. You will see a message at the top of the screen confirming that your domain is now locked. This will lock your domain and cancel the domain transfer. if applicable; It also reactivates privacy protection.
What if my new registrant cannot initiate the transfer because my contact information is not public?
How To Redirect Your Godaddy Domain To Another Link (2021)
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) 2018; It goes into full effect on May 25. This law prohibits registrants from publicly sharing or releasing registrant contact information for multiple registrants. Therefore, Most registrants have implemented GDPR-compliant processes to process transactions without requiring registrant information to be publicly available. If your new registrant is still required to publish your contact information in WHOIS. They will need to have another GDPR compliant process in place. You can request no FOA (Form of Authorization) and use the EPP or identity code to initiate the transfer.
You may want to share this ICANN policy document with your new registrant. Annex G of ICANN’s Interim Terms is a new modification to the transfer policy due to GDPR. A Form of Consent (FOA) should not be sent by e-mail unless the registrar cannot request the registrant’s contact information from the public WHOIS. After they go through the FOA and receive the auth/EPP code, the transfer can be sent to the Registry.
At this time, Most major registrants have GDPR compliant processes in place. However, we know of a few who are unregistered. This is a problem with the process so please contact the new registrar for assistance.
Your email address may expire after the transfer. Contact your new email provider and registrar for information on how to reset your email.
Setting Up A Custom Domain In Godaddy
Make sure you have different addresses on file for your account and domain information. Otherwise, we won’t be able to contact you if you need help.
See these instructions for updating the contact information for your domain. After you update your email address to something you can log in to, You can resend the code as described in step 1.
Most registered domain names have GDPR protection; This means that the registrant’s contact information is not publicly visible, regardless of whether the domain has privacy protection. For these domains, Disabling privacy does not make contact information public.
You can view the list of domain help documents for detailed information on GDPR and private registration, including information on how your domain registrar’s contact information will appear on public WHOIS.
Godaddy Domain Alias Setup
What if my new registrar says they can’t process the transfer because my email address is registered as [email protected]?
, that is wrong. This is the registrant’s abusive email address required by ICANN and has nothing to do with the registrant’s contact information. Other registrars must manually search for your domain to get the correct information or go through the Form of Authorization (FOA) as described above. Go to the Domain Transfer page and enter your domain name to see if it’s eligible for transfer. See the picture below. If you are eligible for transfer, you can proceed to step 2.
As you can see in the picture above. Godaddy has 3 things to do. Disable registrar lock (also known as domain lock); Turn off privacy protection if you have it and get an authorization code.
