This article is primarily for Mail version 10.2 in Sierra (OSX 10.12.32). Your version of Apple Mail may vary depending on the version of Mac OSX you are using.

This guide is for those who have already configured email users for Apple Mail and just want to update the existing settings. If you’re looking for instructions on how to configure a new user, we have another article that might be more suited to your needs:
3. The left box shows a list of email accounts configured for your Apple Mail client. Click on the desired account.

Note: When updating passwords in the Apple Mail settings, make sure to update the Incoming and Outgoing sections. A bug in Apple Mail causes affected mail accounts to lose outgoing mail server (SMTP) information. You can cause the problem by making changes to the outgoing mail server configuration in Mail -> Preferences. Fortunately, after setting up an email account, you don’t need to make any changes to the outgoing mail server configuration. But it’s sad that Apple hasn’t fixed the bug I reported in OS X 10.7 Lion. The current macOS version is 10.12 Sierra and the bug is still there.

When You Can’t Send Mail: Fixing Smtp Problems
I reported this problem to Apple a few years ago when OS X 10.7 Lion was the latest operating system. Even after four years, the problem is still not resolved. I realize this is a low priority, but it shouldn’t be too hard to fix. Let’s see if MacOS 10.13 offers a solution. I posted the problem on the Apple Developer Forum.
