Gmail IMAP is when you want to download your Gmail emails to an email client on your computer, such as Outlook. IMAP will download messages and synchronize changes with Gmail servers so everything stays the same.

How To Configure Email Gateway

Not everyone likes to use the online version of Gmail. Some still prefer the old way of using email clients such as Microsoft Outlook, iOS Mail or macOS Mail. Some even like to use the old and outdated Mozilla Thunderbird. Others have employers who force them to use them.

Whether you find yourself in the willing or unhappy camp of email clients, IMAP is here to make your life easier. It is very easy to set up, as you will see below.

On the desktop, go to the Gmail POP/IMAP and Forwarding page, scroll down to the IMAP Settings section, and select Enable IMAP.

When you select Enable IMAP, new options appear but nothing changes. Just choose to save changes.

How To Access Gmail On An Iphone, Imac And Apple Mail

The screenshot below shows what the Email Client Settings screen should look like when you complete the Gmail IMAP settings.

Also note that if you have enabled two-factor authentication on your email account, giving your password to your email client will not work. In this case, you must create an app-specific password in the security section of your Google Account.

The difference is where your emails are stored. IMAP messages are downloaded to your local email client and synced with the email server (in this case Gmail). So if you send a message using Outlook, the message will be uploaded to Gmail’s servers to be placed in your Sent folder. On the other hand, POP only downloads a copy of your emails to your local email client. It does not send new messages to the mail server.

IMAP receives messages from your email server and downloads them to you. SMTP, on the other hand, is for sending emails from a sender (you) to another email server.
