I want to add iCloud address in Gmail. I entered everything correctly, hoping to show the SMTP settings. But instead it shows the wrong username and password and even gets stuck in the loading screen. I entered an app specific password, the correct imap server, the correct username based on the mail server settings for the iCloud mail client.

If you just want iCloud in Gmail, the app offers an easier way to do it. When adding a new account, just click the iCloud button instead of IMAP.

Then enter your ID and go to id..com and create an app-specific password (see this guide). Then enter that app-specific password into Gmail, and that’s it (no server, configuration, etc.).

I think your IMAP method works with app-specific passwords, but the way mentioned above is easier.

Following a tip from one of our members on the Club + Discord server last night (if you haven’t signed up yet, now’s a good time to do so), I came across a settings page on the beta.icloud.com website to configure a custom domain and email address mail with iCloud Mail. This is a direct link to the settings page; it worked last night but seems to have some issues today.

Custom Domains in iCloud Mail is a feature Apple announced for the “rebranded” iCloud+ service at WWDC, which I’m eager to try for two reasons: I have a personal domain I can use to test this, and iCloud Mail – unlike Gmail – support proper push notifications on iOS. Given the beta nature of this feature, I recommend that you don’t try this with your primary email address right now; I set it up with a second email address that I rarely used before.

How To Setup Icloud Outgoing Mail?

After clicking the link above, I was presented with a screen where I could choose whether to set up a custom email domain, just for me or for me and my family. I don’t hate my family and won’t force them to test this feature right now, so I chose the first option. The iCloud website then took me to a page where I had to enter my domain name and the existing email address I was already using with that domain. This step is necessary because you need to verify that you are indeed the owner of the domain and associated email address.

After I verified the email address by clicking the link in the message I received, iCloud was ready with instructions on how to update the DNS records on my domain registrar’s website. If you’ve previously added a custom domain to a service like Gmail, you should be familiar with this process. Once you’ve changed the records, wait a while (I had to wait a few minutes with mine), hit the “Done” button, and if iCloud can find your updated DNS records, you’re good to go.

After a while as basically an alias in the Mail app. I set up my custom email address last night and it finally showed up as an option in the Mail app this morning (when I clicked the “From” field in the message composer to send a message), along with my other iCloud Mail -alias. However, you can view custom email addresses and set one as the default on the iCloud beta website as shown below.

Rough edges are expected during the beta process, so I assume the public release of this feature will have a good presence in the iCloud settings on all Apple devices.
