How Using Gmail’s

This is a great way to make your WordPress site’s emails more secure without paying for a dedicated email service. Gmail allows you to send up to 500 emails per day, which is enough for the vast majority of WordPress sites.

There are also other common (but not universal) Gmail SMTP settings that you’ll find when trying to set things up. If you encounter them, here’s how to answer them:

As mentioned above, the default server address is smtp.gmail.com. You can sign in using your full Gmail email address and Google password.

New Fast Smtp Sending Option

Yeah! you can. If you use other email clients like Thunderbird or Outlook, you can use your Gmail SMTP server details to send email through your Gmail account.

However, remember that SMTP is only for sending email. If you want to receive emails in your Gmail account in another email client, you must use POP3 or IMAP. You can find these settings by opening Gmail settings and going to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.

With a free Gmail account, you can send up to 500 emails per day, which is significantly higher than the limits used by other free SMTP servers.

What Are Gmail’s Smtp Settings?

If you have a paid Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) account, Google will increase your limit even further, allowing you to send up to 2,000 emails per day. You can send email from your personal domain name instead of your Gmail address. In other words, you can send [email protected] instead of [email protected]. To do this, you must also connect your Google Workspace MX records to your custom domain name for your Google Workspace account.

Note: There is not technically a “per day” posting limit. Instead, the restrictions apply for a “24-hour period”. For example, you cannot send 500 emails at 11:59 PM on Monday and then another 500 emails at 12:01 AM on Tuesday.

Yeah! You can use the SMTP server even if you have enabled two-step authentication on your Google account. However, you must create an app password so that the app can still connect.

However, if you want to use Gmail’s SMTP server to send emails from your WordPress site, we do not recommend using this method. Instead, you should use the Gmail API method, which we’ll cover in detail in the tutorial below. This allows you to send email via the Gmail API instead of entering SMTP server details, which has the advantage of avoiding two-factor authentication issues.

Send Mail As

Now, let’s see how you can use Gmail’s SMTP server to send transactional emails from your WordPress site for free. This method works great and increases the reliability of your site’s emails by using the default PHP email method.

To set this up, instead of simply connecting the SMTP details, you’ll need to create a Google app to connect to Gmail’s SMTP server via the API. There are good steps to make this happen. This is just a one-time setup process. In other words, after 30 to 60 minutes to make these settings, your site will still benefit from autopilot.

In addition to creating a Google application, you also need the help of a WordPress SMTP plugin. We use the free Post SMTP Mailer/Email Log plugin, but the free WP Mail SMTP plugin is also a good option that supports the Gmail API.

Note – The purpose of this tutorial is to use a free Gmail account. However, you can follow a similar process to configure your site to send email through your Google Workspace (G Suite) account.

How To Send An Email With Python & Gmail

To get started, you need to install and activate the free Post SMTP Mailer/Email Log plugin from WordPress.org. This allows you to configure your WordPress site to send email through the Gmail API/SMTP server.

After activating the plugin, go to the Post SMTP tab in your WordPress dashboard and click the Show All Settings link below the big Get Started button.

Next, go to the “Message” tab and set your “From” email address and name. You can use your Gmail address as the “from” email, or you can use another email address if you prefer.

Then go back to the Account tab and select Gmail API from the Type drop-down list. After making this selection, you should see additional options in the Authentication box below. Leave this page open because you’ll need the authorized JavaScript resources and authorized redirect URI details in the next step:

Now you need to create a Google app. This allows your WordPress site to send email securely using the Gmail API. Again, this is the trickiest part of the process. But basically it’s just a lot of button clicking, and we’ll give you all the steps/photos you need to do it.

To get started, open a new tab and copy this URL to go to the Google Developers Console. There you need to create a new project. If this is your first time accessing the Developers Console, Google will prompt you to create your first project. Alternatively, if you already have projects, you can create a new one by clicking the drop-down menu in the upper left corner (labeled [1] in the image below).

You should now be in a dedicated interface for the Gmail API. Click the button to create credit:

Now, Google will ask you to set up a consent page. This is a type of permission page that you see when you use Google to sign up/log in to this site.

Gmail Is Disabling Less Secure Apps: What To Do Next

You need to do this to meet Google’s requirements, but you don’t have to worry about the information you enter because you will only use it for your WordPress site.

This should open a new tab where you can configure the OAuth consent page (keep your main browser tab handy as you’ll need to come back to it in a moment). In the User Type section, select External. Then click Create:

On the next page, enter your basic site information. Again, you’re the only one who can see this information, so you don’t have to worry about what you put here.

Now go back to the Add Credentials tab in your project interface and enter the following information:

When you’ve added everything, click Update. Next, the Update button should change to Generate OAuth Client ID – click it to complete the process, then click Done.

After you click Done, you should see a section for OAuth 2.0 Client ID on the Credentials tab of your project (it will open automatically when you click Done).

To complete the setup, go back to the SMTP Mail/Email Log post settings in your WordPress dashboard and enter the Client ID and Client Password from the previous step. After that, don’t forget to save your changes:

Clicking this link will open the normal Google authorization process (as if you were logged in using your Google login). However, since you haven’t submitted your app to Google for review, Google will give you a “This app is not verified” warning.

Since this is your personal app, you can ignore the warning. Click on Show advanced settings option and go to “yourwebsite.com” (secure) link to continue the authorization process:

You will now go through the normal process. Select the option to allow your WordPress site to access your Gmail account. These permissions are required to send email through Gmail’s SMTP server.

To make sure everything is working, Post SMTP Mailer/Email Log includes the ability to send test emails. You can access this from the main settings page:
