Most Microsoft products have a support period during which they receive new features, bug fixes, security patches, and more. This life cycle lasts 10 years from the first release of the product. The end of this life cycle is called the end of product support. As Exchange 2010 ends support on October 13, 2020, Microsoft:
After this date, your Exchange 2010 installation will continue. However, due to the above changes, we recommend that you migrate from Exchange 2010 as soon as possible.
For more information about end of support, see Resources for upgrading from Office 2010 servers and clients.
If your organization chooses to move mailboxes to Microsoft 365, but your organization plans to keep DirSync or Azure AD Connect to continue managing user accounts from Active Directory, you must keep at least one Microsoft Exchange server on-premises. If you remove all Exchange servers, you cannot make changes to Exchange recipients in Exchange Online because the source of authority remains in the on-premises Active Directory. There has to be a change. In this case, you have the following options:
Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Standard
It’s a bit more complicated, but you can migrate mailboxes to Microsoft 365 when migrating Exchange 2010 servers to Exchange 2016.
You can use the following three methods to prevent the end of support for Exchange Server 2010.
Migrating your email to Microsoft 365 is the best and simplest option to help you move away from Exchange 2010. By moving to Microsoft 365, you can move from legacy technology to current capabilities at the same time, including:
Microsoft 365 is the first to get new features and experiences, so your organization can start using them right away. And you don’t have to worry:

Depending on your organization, there are several options for signing in to Microsoft 365. First, you need to consider a few things, such as:
The following sections provide an overview of these methods. For more information, see Choosing a Migration Path.
In a split migration, you migrate all your mailboxes, distribution groups, contacts, etc. to Office 365 at a specified date and time. Once you’re done, you can turn off your Exchange servers and start using Microsoft 365 only.
Split migration is ideal for small organizations that don’t have mailboxes, want to quickly access Microsoft 365, and don’t want to deal with the complexity of other methods. But it should be done in a week or less. It also requires users to reset their Outlook profiles. Truncated migration can migrate up to 2,000 mailboxes, but we recommend that you use it for a maximum of 150. If you want to transfer more money, all mailboxes may be exhausted before the deadline. users may be inundated with requests to help restore Outlook settings.

In a minimal hybrid or express migration, you can move hundreds of mailboxes to Microsoft 365 in a few weeks. This method does not support advanced hybrid migration features such as free/busy calendar data.
Minimal Hybrid Migration is great for organizations that need to spend more time migrating their mailboxes to Microsoft 365, but expect to complete the migration in a few weeks. You get some of the benefits of advanced versions
Uncomplicated. You can control how many and which mailboxes are moved at any time. Microsoft 365 mailboxes are created with your account username and password. And unlike a split transition, your users don’t have to recreate their Outlook profiles.
In a full hybrid migration, you will have hundreds and tens of thousands of mailboxes and move some or all of them to Microsoft 365. Since these transfers are usually long-term, hybrid transfers allow:
Configure Microsoft Exchange Email On Ubuntu
A full hybrid migration is best for organizations that plan to stay in a hybrid configuration for several months or longer. You’ll be able to move and migrate mailboxes to Microsoft 365 using the features listed earlier in this section, as well as directory synchronization, integrated compliance features, and online mailbox migration. Microsoft 365 becomes an extension of your organization.
If your organization chooses to migrate mailboxes to Microsoft 365, but plans to use DirSync or Azure AD Connect to continue managing user accounts from on-premises Active Directory, you must maintain at least one Exchange server yourself. If all Exchange servers are down, you cannot make changes to Exchange recipients in Exchange Online. This is because the source of authority remains in your primary Active Directory and must be changed there.
We’re confident you’ll get the best value and user experience by fully migrating to Microsoft 365. However, we understand that some organizations need to host some Exchange servers. This may be due to regulatory requirements to ensure data is not stored in an external data center, you have unique configurations or requirements that cannot be met in the cloud, or you still need Exchange to manage your cloud mailboxes. Local Active Directory. In any case, if you are running Exchange on-premise, you should ensure that your Exchange 2010 environment is at least upgraded to Exchange 2013 or Exchange 2016.
We recommend that you upgrade the rest of your environment to Exchange 2016 for the best experience. If you want to migrate directly from Exchange Server 2010 to Exchange Server 2016, you do not need to install Exchange Server 2013.
