Outgoing Mail Server Smtp Offline – A bug in Apple Mail caused affected email accounts to lose outgoing mail server (SMTP) information. You can trigger the problem by changing the outgoing mail server configuration in Mail -> Preferences. Fortunately, there is no need to change the configuration of your outgoing email server after setting up your email account. But it’s annoying that Apple hasn’t fixed the bug I reported in OS X 10.7 Lion. The current version of MacOS is 10.12 Sierra, and the bug still exists.

I reported this problem to Apple a few years ago when OS X 10.7 Lion was the latest OS. Four years later, the issue is still unresolved. I know it’s a low priority, but it shouldn’t be a difficult bug to fix. Let’s see if MacOS 10.13 brings any improvements. I also posted the issue on the Apple Developer Forum.

2012 Mac Mini Server (6, 2) running OS X 10.11.4. Apple Mail won’t send mail – SMTP server shows offline. I checked all setup parameters again and again. Same system works on iPad & iPhone. I have researched on the internet and tried all the suggested solutions for dealing with the files in the V2 and V3 folders, which I am not comfortable with. Deleted & Reconfigured Accounts, Deleted & Reconfigured Keychain Entries, Confirmed Setup with ISP. SMTP doesn’t work with Verizon accounts, but it doesn’t work with Google or iPower.com accounts either. Everything works fine in Mavericks. My OS X upgrade from Mavericks wasn’t a clean install if that matters. I’ve done all the steps in Apple’s troubleshooting guide. Who got the solution?

Thanks for your reply, but if it was easier, I wouldn’t post here. I’ve done it countless times.

My mom had the same problem a year ago with Cox email. If I remember correctly, I deleted and re-added the SMTP server for her account. It finally started working. You could have saved the original entry (labeled it “bad”), added a new one, made sure it worked, and then deleted the old one.

Alternatively, what I can do is remove the password from the SMTP entry.

Excuse me. Like I said it’s been a year.

Inflammation Has anyone else found a solution to this answer? I’ve changed the Accounts.plist, added/removed the smtp list several times, added a new smtp server that I know but isn’t in the list. All of them are still offline.

I tested the problem on the laptop, smtp worked fine, then moved my email to the laptop and went back to offline.

I recently had the same problem and discovered that my vpn, PIA (Private Internet Access), was the culprit.

You can check your Internet connection and the status of your email account with Connection Doctor. You can also open the Attachment Doctor while the Mail application is open by going to the top menu and selecting Window > Attachment Doctor.
