With an Outlook SMTP server, you can configure your preferred email client to send email through your Outlook account. If you have a WordPress website, you can also configure WordPress to send emails through your Outlook account to improve the reliability of your website emails.

Configure Sending An Office 365 Out Of Office Message

Here are the details you need to configure your email client or WordPress site to use the Outlook SMTP server:

The Outlook SMTP server has some sending limits that you should be aware of: you can send 300 emails per day to 100 recipients.

While the Outlook SMTP server allows you to send email through your Outlook account, POP3 and IMAP allow you to import messages sent to you by others. In the next section we will cover IMAP.

If you want to use an email client, it’s important to add your POP3 or IMAP credentials to receive emails from Outlook in your email client. In general, IMAP is better than POP3 if you want to access your email from multiple devices (such as desktop and mobile), as it allows two-way synchronization. However, POP3 may be a better choice if you only use one device.

Note that Outlook disables POP3 by default. To enable it, click the gear icon at the top right of the Outlook interface and search for “POP”. Then click on the result for POP and IMAP (or you can click this link to go directly there).

Under POP Options, under Allow devices and apps to use POP, select Yes. You can then choose whether apps and devices should delete or keep emails from Outlook forever.

As we mentioned earlier, IMAP is often the better choice if you want to access your email from multiple devices. Outlook enables IMAP access by default, so all you need to do is use the following settings:

Let’s say you want to improve the reliability of the emails your WordPress site sends. In this case, you can also configure your WordPress site to send emails via the Outlook SMTP server to take advantage of the generous sending limits (up to 300 emails per day to 100 recipients).

The setup process involves pasting the Outlook SMTP server settings into a WordPress SMTP plugin (see below). However, if you run into problems, there are many other free SMTP servers to choose from, including the free Gmail SMTP server.

To configure WordPress to use an SMTP service, you need to install a WordPress SMTP plugin. There are several popular options, but we recommend the Post SMTP plugin because it’s 100% free and has features to solve potential problems with your website’s emails.

To get started, install and activate the free plugin on WordPress.org. Next, go to the new Post SMTP section of your WordPress dashboard and click Show All Settings:

Then go to the Message tab and enter your “To” email address and your name. The email address must belong to your Outlook account, and the name can be anything you want recipients to see:

If you have a problem, you can fix it by going to Mail SMTP > Email Log and analyzing the specific error message of the failed emails. The plugin will also suggest a solution for you. For example, if you’ve entered the wrong password, you’ll be prompted to recheck the details:
