Outlook’s SMTP server allows you to configure your desired email program to send emails through your Outlook account. If you have a WordPress site, you can also configure WordPress to send its emails through your Outlook account to improve the reliability of your site’s emails.

In this post, we will cover everything you need to know about SMTP settings in Outlook. We’ll start with actual SMTP settings and POP3 and IMAP settings (for not only sending but also receiving email).
Office 365 Server Settings
Here is the information you need to configure your email client or WordPress site to use Outlook’s SMTP server:

While Outlook’s SMTP server allows you to send email through your Outlook account, POP3 and IMAP allow you to import email sent to you by others. We cover IMAP in the next section.
Email Outlook 365 Windows
If you want to use an email program, it is also important to add either POP3 or IMAP credentials to receive emails from Outlook in your email program. In general, IMAP is better than POP3 if you want to access your email from multiple devices (eg desktop and mobile) because it allows for two-way synchronization. However, POP3 may be a better choice if you only use one device.
Note that Outlook disables POP3 by default. To enable it, click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the Outlook interface and search for “POP”. Then click on POP and IMAP input (or you can go directly there by clicking this link).
In the POP Settings section, under Allow devices and applications to use POP, select Yes. You can then choose whether apps and devices should delete emails from Outlook or keep them permanently.
As we mentioned earlier, IMAP is usually the better option if you want to access your email from multiple devices. Outlook allows IMAP access by default, so all you have to do is use these settings:
How To Check Your Incoming And Outgoing Settings
Let’s say you want to improve the reliability of emails sent by your WordPress site. In this case, you can also configure your WordPress site to send its emails through Outlook’s SMTP server to take advantage of generous sending limits (300 emails per day to up to 100 recipients).
The installation process mainly involves connecting your Outlook SMTP server settings to the WordPress SMTP plugin (see below). But if you run into problems, there are also many other free SMTP servers to choose from, including the free SMTP server for Gmail.
To configure WordPress to use the SMTP service, you need to install the WordPress SMTP plugin. There are several popular options, but we recommend the Post SMTP plugin because it’s 100% free and includes features to fix any issues with your site’s emails.
Get started by installing and activating a free plugin from WordPress.org. Next, go to the new Post SMTP section of your WordPress dashboard and click Show All Settings:

Then go to the Message tab and enter your “From” email address and name. The email address must be your Outlook account address, while the name can be anything you want recipients to see:
On the Account tab, select SMTP from the Type drop-down menu and make sure PostSMTP appears in the Mail Type drop-down menu.

How Can I Update My Email Settings In Outlook?
If you have a problem, you can solve it by going to Send SMTP > Email log and looking at the error message for failed emails. The plugin also suggests a solution for you. For example, if you have entered the wrong password, you will be asked to confirm the information:

For WordPress users, the benefit here is that the reliability of your site’s emails is improved because you can take advantage of Outlook’s optimized SMTP servers. The daily sending limit of 300 emails should also be more than enough for most WordPress sites.
For e-mail clients, the SMTP server provides the ability to send e-mail messages through the client’s user interface. If you combine it with POP3 or IMAP, you can also receive your Outlook emails with your favorite email program or client.

You cannot manually set up a new Microsoft Exchange account while Outlook is running. Before starting this procedure, make sure that Outlook is not running on your computer.

At this point, you may be prompted to sign in to your Office 365 account. If yes, log in as normal and continue to the next step.
After the desktop installation is complete, you may need to restart your computer. Your version of Outlook is now updated and you can continue to connect to Microsoft Exchange Server.
Change Or Update Email Account Settings In Outlook For Windows
If you don’t see the Mail option, change the view (in the upper right corner of the control panel) to either large icons or small icons.
If the following window appears, Outlook has been detected running on your computer. To continue, please close Outlook before continuing.
DO NOT click the Check Name button at this step. Doing so will cause the configuration to fail.
