Can someone explain to me why every time I get disconnected from my ISP email service (like when Windows arbitrarily decides to update and reopen) when I try to log back into my email account I get a warning saying that, essence, “No trusted provider needs this” and wants me to cancel and connect?

Another question I have is this: there is a checkbox in the popup that says “Store exceptions permanently”, already checked. WHY didn’t T-Bird save it or see it other than saved? I have to do this every time I log out, and there are few things on a computer that annoy me more than settings being completely ignored after a selection (like Windows updating anyway when I told them not to…)

Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Thanks for any help you can find!!

I can’t believe I’m saying this… but I really miss the early days of DOS… Things were (relatively) simple. There are no apps that secretly do their pranks on anything. *They don’t hide, but you have to be alert and have a lot of time on your hands to pull these things off.

I agree that solving the real problem is the way to go. Lately I seem to be spending more time tracking down (usually Windows) issues than actually using them. Is it my ISP? Is it a TBird? Is it my antivirus? Further muddying the waters is the fact that other email clients (Windows) do not have the same problem. It also doesn’t show up when I run TBird on Linux. It’s hard to know where to start!

The View button gave me a new tab that just showed ‘windows whirlygig’ on the tab while trying to load. this is the “View” attachment.

“find” button changed the “exception” popup to say no data available. this is the “Download” attachment.

Closing the ‘exceptions’ window (using the ‘x’ in the top right) finally allowed a new tab to be filled. more information was displayed than the screen could show, so it was split into two parts. namely the attachments “Cert1” and Cert2.

I have seen many Avast credentials and I am amazed. opened avast and checked the exceptions section and TBird is already listed as an exception (don’t scan or protect) there. namely the “A_Exception” attachment.

There are two issues here. 1. The certificate returned by Thunderbird is issued by Avast and not by a regular Certificate Authority. This means that Avast intercepts your secure connection to the server and inserts a flight certificate (the one you see) because it is configured to scan encrypted connections. Additionally, it imports its root certificate into the Thunderbird certificate store so that Thunderbird does not complain about a certificate from an unknown issuer. It is also possible that you did this on purpose. However, this is basically the same tactic an attacker would use to trick you into connecting to a malicious server, also known as a man-in-the-middle attack. This means Avast can also see your account password, which is usually transmitted to an end-to-end encryption server. So I hope you trust Avast.
