You can use the Outlook SMTP server to set your preferred email client for sending emails through your Outlook account. If you have a WordPress website, you can also configure WordPress to send your emails through your Outlook account to increase the reliability of emails on your website.

While Outlook’s SMTP server allows you to send email through your Outlook account, POP3 and IMAP allow you to import email sent to you by other people. We will cover IMAP in the next section.

If you want to use an email client, it’s also important to add POP3 or IMAP credentials to your email client to receive Outlook emails. In general, IMAP is better than POP3 if you want to access your email from multiple devices (such as a computer and mobile) because it allows two-way synchronization. However, POP3 may be a better choice if you only use one device.

You should be aware that Outlook disables POP3 by default. To enable it, click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the Outlook interface and search for “POP”. Then click on the POP and IMAP result (or you can click this link to go directly there).

Under POP options, under Allow apps and devices to use POP, select Yes. You can then choose whether apps and devices should delete Outlook emails or keep them permanently.

As we mentioned before, IMAP is often the better choice if you want to access your email from multiple devices. Outlook allows IMAP access by default, so all you have to do is use these settings:

Let’s say you want to improve the reliability of the emails your WordPress site sends. In this case, you can also configure your WordPress site to send your emails through Outlook’s SMTP server to take advantage of the generous sending limits (300 emails per day up to 100 recipients).

The setup process mainly involves inserting the Outlook SMTP server settings into the WordPress SMTP plugin (see below). However, if you’re struggling, there are also plenty of other free SMTP servers to choose from, including Gmail’s free SMTP server.

To configure WordPress to use the SMTP service, you need to install the WordPress SMTP plugin. There are a few popular options, but we recommend the Post SMTP plugin because it’s 100% free and includes features for debugging potential email issues with your website.

To get started, install and activate a free plugin from WordPress.org. Then go to the new Publish SMTP section in the WordPress dashboard and click on Show All Settings:

Then go to the Message tab and enter your email address and “From” name. The email address should be the one in your Outlook account, while the name can be whatever you want your recipients to see:

You should now see an expanded set of options in Outlook’s SMTP Server Details field. Enter them like this:

If you have a problem, you can fix it by going to Publish SMTP > Email Log and looking at the specific error message for failed emails. The plugin will also suggest a solution for you. For example, if you’ve entered the wrong password, you’ll be prompted to re-verify your details:
