Java Send Email Without Smtp Server – A java application I’m working on has a function to send emails through the company’s SMTP server to notify certain personnel whenever an error occurs. For security reasons, only servers on certain networks can access the SMTP server and send email. For example, the computer I used to build the application does not have access to the SMTP server. While looking for an email testing tool, I found MailHog. Within minutes, I was able to run MailHog and test sending emails without having to deploy the app to remote servers.
For my situation, all I need is a way to validate the content of the email that my app generates and sends to specific addresses. This process is a manual check and not an automated one. Therefore, MailHog works well and is also extremely easy to set up. I tested it on a Windows machine with a 64 bit OS.

MailHog is extremely easy to set up. In fact, I don’t need to install anything. I just had to download the executable file for my platform. You can find versions of MailHog here. For me, I downloaded the file MailHog_windows_amd64.exe.

Running the file opens a command prompt window that displays the app’s results, as shown in the snippets below.
It is now ready to use. Note that I will leave the MailHog instance running during testing. From my Java app, I can send email to the MailHog instance via SMTP port 1025 as shown in the snippets above.
In the snippets above, I have coded the smtp port and smtp host for demonstration purposes. We actually load the configurations from the properties file, based on the target environment.
The screenshot below shows how the trapped email comes from the application to MailHog. The web interface can be reached at localhost:8025.

Basically, I find MailHog to be super easy to use and just what I need for local testing. While I haven’t explored MailHog further, it should be possible to embed MailHog for automated integration testing. The response code 250 means that this is a complete successful response on the status of the mail system, which means that the SMTP server has recognized your IP address and is waiting for your next command.

SMTP codes starting with 2 and 3 are general status messages sent in response to requests from the sending server. They do not indicate errors in mail delivery, but are used as a prompt in the exchange between mail servers.
