Java Send Email Without Smtp Server

Java Send Email Without Smtp Server – A java application I’m working on has a function to send emails through the company’s SMTP server to notify certain personnel whenever an error occurs. For security reasons, only servers on certain networks can access the SMTP server and send email. For example, the computer I used to build the application does not have access to the SMTP server. While looking for an email testing tool, I found MailHog. Within minutes, I was able to run MailHog and test sending emails without having to deploy the app to remote servers.

For my situation, all I need is a way to validate the content of the email that my app generates and sends to specific addresses. This process is a manual check and not an automated one. Therefore, MailHog works well and is also extremely easy to set up. I tested it on a Windows machine with a 64 bit OS.

MailHog is extremely easy to set up. In fact, I don’t need to install anything. I just had to download the executable file for my platform. You can find versions of MailHog here. For me, I downloaded the file MailHog_windows_amd64.exe.

Running the file opens a command prompt window that displays the app’s results, as shown in the snippets below.

It is now ready to use. Note that I will leave the MailHog instance running during testing. From my Java app, I can send email to the MailHog instance via SMTP port 1025 as shown in the snippets above.

In the snippets above, I have coded the smtp port and smtp host for demonstration purposes. We actually load the configurations from the properties file, based on the target environment.

The screenshot below shows how the trapped email comes from the application to MailHog. The web interface can be reached at localhost:8025.

Basically, I find MailHog to be super easy to use and just what I need for local testing. While I haven’t explored MailHog further, it should be possible to embed MailHog for automated integration testing. For example, you may have your application running on a container where MailHog is configured to run automatically. If you’re looking for a way to test email features, check out MailHog.

In this blog post I will show you how to use sap-cf-mailer based on nodemailer to send emails via SMTP server defined in your destinations.

Instead of testing the code with your email account and loading your mailbox full of test emails, you can use mailtrap as a test SMTP server. It’s free for a mailbox.

Create an account on mailtrap and create a new mailbox. Open your inbox and take a look at the settings. All mail sent via this SMTP server will be sent there without being sent to the actual recipient.

To send mail, we first need to read these destination properties and then send them to the nodemailer library. To make things much easier, I created a new library that reads the target service and adds it to the nodemailer for you.

Your application needs a reference to a destination service to read the mailtrap-destination. This is my mta.yaml file

So, now you can send email in your nodejs cloud foundry application using sap-cf-mailer module. For more advanced features like sending email and html attachments, you can consult the nodemailer documentation. When your transactional emails are not delivered, you may have an SMTP error that needs to be fixed. But some of the codes are super confusing! Read on to learn about common SMTP response codes and how to troubleshoot delivery issues.

Getting started with SMTP for your transactional emails is quick and easy. Simply provide your server name, port, username and password. The SMTP server then sends email on your behalf and takes care of email delivery.

However, when an SMTP error prevents your emails from being sent, it can be difficult to understand the cryptic error codes in the delivery reports. Read on to learn how to read common SMTP response codes and troubleshoot delivery errors.

SMTP response codes are updates sent by an SMTP server during the mail delivery process. Using a 3-digit format, they are sent in response to commands issued by an SMTP client. The following diagram shows the relationship between the client and the SMTP server in the mail delivery process.

The SMTP specification defines basic status codes that were published in 1982. Since the codes were originally designed to report the success of an SMTP command, their lack of detail made them unsuitable for delivery reports.

To compound the problem, some servers assign the same error code to multiple delivery errors. Others assign a code that only explains its meaning in the textual description. The inconsistent application of the codes meant that it was difficult to sort out the sending of mail!

Enter advanced status codes. Extending the basic status codes provides more detail about the cause of the email delivery failure. In addition, they also consist of 3-digit numbers separated by decimals. Let’s see how to read next.

The first digit of a basic status code tells the sending server whether the response is good, bad, or incomplete:

For example, if you telnet to the SMTP server and appear with the HELO command, you will see the following exchange:

The response code 250 means that this is a complete successful response on the status of the mail system, which means that the SMTP server has recognized your IP address and is waiting for your next command.

For example, if you specify the email recipient with the RCPT TO command, the SMTP server may respond with 250 2.1.5 Recipient OK. This code means that not only your command was successful, but also the address of the recipient on the server was accepted.

The current SMTP standard defines response codes, but they are applied differently between SMTP servers. Not all mail servers are configured the same and therefore here

Remember: since no two SMTP servers are the same, a “mailbox not available” response on one server could be a “message rejected” error on another!

SMTP codes starting with 2 and 3 are general status messages sent in response to requests from the sending server. They do not indicate errors in mail delivery, but are used as a prompt in the exchange between mail servers.

SMTP 400 codes are transient errors and are usually related to problems on the receiving mail server. The messages are returned as soft bounces and the sender can try again later, for example, by reducing the size of the attachments in the email.

SMTP 500 response codes are mail delivery errors of a permanent nature, usually caused by the sender. The receiving server returns the message as a hard bounce and prefers that the sender not try again unless the problem is resolved.

SMTP error codes become more serious, such as being suspected of sending spam or appearing on a block list. As an email sender, you should pay attention to the following codes because they can affect your sender reputation and email delivery.

Error code 550 is sometimes used as a generic error code and can also appear as 550 Error Blocked or 550 Invalid Recipient depending on the server configuration. If you get the blocked error message, check if your IP address is on a blocked list.
