Setting Up Gmail For Pop3 And Smtp

This is a great way to make your WordPress site’s emails more reliable without spending money on a dedicated email delivery service. Gmail can send up to 500 emails a day, which is more than most WordPress sites.

As we mentioned above, the default server address is smtp.gmail.com. You can login using your full Gmail email address and Google password.

However, remember that SMTP is for sending email only. If you want to receive emails in your Gmail account from another email client, you must use POP3 or IMAP. You can find these settings by opening your Gmail settings and going to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.

What Are Gmail’s Smtp Settings?

If you have a Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) account, Google will raise your domain to a higher level and send you up to 2,000 emails a day. You can also send emails from your custom domain name instead of your Gmail address. In other words, you can send from [email protected] instead of [email protected]. To do this, you must also configure Google Workspace MX records to associate your Google Workspace account with your custom domain name.

Note: Of course, delivery limits are not “daily”. However, the limits apply to a “24 hour lock”. For example, you cannot send 500 emails at 11:59 pm on Monday and 500 emails at 12:01 am on Sunday.

However, if you want to use Gmail’s SMTP server to send emails from your WordPress site, we don’t recommend using this method. Instead, you need to use the Gmail API method which we will discuss in the tutorial below. This allows you to send emails using the Gmail API instead of just entering SMTP server information, which also has the advantage of avoiding problems with two-factor authentication.

So let’s see how you can use Gmail SMTP server to send transactional emails from your WordPress site for free. This method works well and improves the reliability of your website emails to use standard PHP email method.

To set this up, you need to create a Google app so that you can connect to the Gmail SMTP server via the API instead of just inputting your SMTP information. There are many good options for doing this. This is a simple setup process. In other words, when it takes you 30-60 minutes to get this set up, your site will still be profitable on autopilot.

In addition to creating a Google application, you will also need the help of a WordPress SMTP plugin. We use the Post SMTP Mailer/Email Log plugin, but the free WP Mail SMTP plugin is another great plugin that supports the Gmail API.

Note – This tutorial focuses on using a free Gmail account. However, you can follow a similar procedure to configure your website to send emails through your Google Workspace (G Suite) account.

How To Set The Correct Outlook Smtp Settings To Send Emails

To get started, you need to install and activate the WordPress.org Post SMTP Mailer/Email Log plugin. This allows you to configure your WordPress site to send email through the Gmail API/SMTP server.

After activating the plugin, go to the Post SMTP tab in the WordPress dashboard and click on the Show All Settings link under the Start Wizard button.

Then go to the Messages tab and set your “from” email address and name. You can use your Gmail address as the “from” email, or you can use a different email address if you prefer.

Then go back to the Accounts tab and select Gmail API from the Type dropdown menu. As you make this choice, you will see more options in the Authentication box below. Keep this page open because you will need the JavaScript source and authorization URI details in the next section:

So, you need to create a Google application. This allows your WordPress site to send emails through the Gmail API. Again, this is the most difficult part of this process. However, it’s mostly about clicking multiple buttons and we’ll provide all the steps/pictures needed to make that happen.

To get started, open a new tab and copy this URL to access the Google Developers Console. There, you need to create a new project. If this is your first time signing into Creator, Google will ask you to create your first project. If you have projects, you can create a new one by clicking on the dropdown menu in the top left corner (marked by [1] in the image below).

You should now be in a dedicated interface for the Gmail API. Click the button to Create Tags:

Now Google will ask you to set up a consent screen. This is the type of confirmation screen you see when using Google to sign up/log in to a website.

This will open a new tab where you can configure the OAuth authorization screen (keep your browser’s original tab, as you’ll need to get back there in a second). Under User Type, select External. Then click Create:

On the next screen, enter your website’s basic details. Also – you don’t have to worry about what to post here, because only you will see this information.

Now, go back to the tab containing Add tags to your project’s interface and enter the following information:

After adding everything, click Update. The Test button should now change to Create an OAuth Client ID – click to complete the process and click Finish.

After clicking Finish, you will see a section for OAuth 2.0 Client IDs in the Details tab for your project (should open automatically after you click Finish).

To complete the setup, go back to the SMTP Mailer Alert/Email Log settings in the WordPress dashboard and paste the Customer ID and Customer Password from the previous step. So save your changes:

Adding Gmail / G Suite Account Using Imap /smtp

Clicking that link will open the Google authentication process (again, just as if you were registering with a Google login site). However, since you haven’t submitted your app to Google for review, Google will show you a “This app has not been verified” warning.

Since this is your own app, you can ignore the warning. Click the option to show advanced settings and click Go to “yoursite.com” (not secure) link to continue the verification process:

You will now go through the regular process. Make sure to select the Allow your WordPress site to access your Gmail account option. These permissions are required to send email through Gmail’s SMTP server.

To make sure everything is working, Post SMTP Mailer/Email Log contains an option to send a test email. You can access it from the main settings page:
