Gmail IMAP is when you want to download your Gmail messages to an email client on your computer, such as Outlook. IMAP downloads the messages and sends the changes back to the Gmail servers so that everything stays the same.

How Can I Set Up Email On My Iphone?

Not everyone likes to use the web version of Gmail. Some still prefer the old way of using email clients like Microsoft Outlook, iOS Mail or macOS Mail. Some may even use the old and now defunct Mozilla Thunderbird. Others have employers who force them to use it.

If you willingly or unwillingly find yourself in the email client camp, IMAP is there to make your life easier. It is very easy to install as you can see below.

On the desktop, go to the Gmail and POP/IMAP forwarding page, scroll down to the IMAP settings section, and select Enable IMAP.

After you select Enable IMAP, new options will appear, but you won’t be able to change any of them. Just save the changes.

How To Configure Mail Server Settings Using Gmail Account?

The screenshot below shows what the email client configuration screen should look like when the correct Gmail IMAP options are filled in.

It’s also worth noting that if you have two-factor authentication enabled on your email account, giving your password to your email client won’t work. In this case, you will need to create a special app password in the security section of your Google account.

The difference is where your emails are stored. IMAP messages are uploaded to your local email client and synced with the email server (in this case Gmail). So if you send a message using Outlook, that message is uploaded to Gmail’s servers to be placed in your sent folder. POP, on the other hand, simply downloads copies of your emails to your local email client. It does not send new messages to the mail server.

IMAP retrieves messages from your email server and downloads them to you. Meanwhile, SMTP is for sending email from the sender (you) to another email server.
