Gmail IMAP is when you want to download your Gmail messages to an email client on your computer, such as Outlook. IMAP downloads the messages and sends the changes back to the Gmail servers so that everything stays the same.

On the desktop, go to the Gmail and POP/IMAP forwarding page, scroll down to the IMAP settings section, and select Enable IMAP.

The difference is where your emails are stored. IMAP messages are uploaded to your local email client and synced with the email server (in this case Gmail). So if you send a message using Outlook, that message is uploaded to Gmail’s servers to be placed in your sent folder. POP, on the other hand, simply downloads copies of your emails to your local email client. It does not send new messages to the mail server.
IMAP retrieves messages from your email server and downloads them to you. Meanwhile, SMTP is for sending email from the sender (you) to another email server.
