Incoming Mail Server Settings For Gmail
Gmail IMAP is when you want to download emails from Gmail to an email client on your computer, such as Outlook. IMAP will download messages and sync changes back to Gmail servers so everything stays the same.
Iphone: Set Up Email
Not everyone likes to use the online version of Gmail. Some people still prefer the old way of using email clients like Microsoft Outlook, iOS Mail, or macOS Mail. Some may prefer to use the now outdated Mozilla Thunderbird. Some have employers who force them to use it.
If you find yourself in the email client camp willingly or not, IMAP is here to make your life easier. It is very easy to set up, as you will see below.
Go to the Gmail Forwarding and POP/IMAP page on the desktop, scroll down to the IMAP settings section, and select Enable IMAP.
If you select Enable IMAP, new options appear but do not change anything. Just choose to save the changes.

The screenshot below shows what the email client configuration screen should look like once you’ve filled in the appropriate Gmail IMAP options.
It should also be noted that if two-factor authentication is enabled on your email account, giving your email client your password will not work. In this case, you need to create an app-specific password in the security section of your Google account.
The difference is where your emails are stored. IMAP messages are uploaded to your local email client and synced to your email server (in this case, Gmail). So when you send a message using Outlook, that message will be uploaded to Gmail’s servers to stay in your Sent folder. POP, on the other hand, only downloads copies of your emails from your local email client. It does not send new messages to the email server.
IMAP retrieves messages from your email server and downloads them for you. Currently, SMTP is for sending emails from the sender (you) to another email server.
