Gmail IMAP is where you want to download your Gmail emails to your computer’s email client, such as Outlook. IMAP downloads messages and syncs your changes to Gmail’s servers so everything stays the same.

Gmail On Outlook 2016

Not everyone likes to use the online version of Gmail. Some still prefer the traditional way of using email clients such as Microsoft Outlook, iOS Mail, or macOS Mail. Some may even prefer to use the outdated and now defunct Mozilla Thunderbird. Some have employers who force them to use it.

If you’re in the email client camp, IMAP is here to make your life easier. It is very easy to set up, as you will see below.

Go to Gmail’s Forwarding and POP/IMAP page on the desktop, scroll down until you reach the IMAP settings section, and select Turn off IMAP.

When you select Remove IMAP, new options appear, but don’t change any of them. Just select Save Changes.
