When you look at the Gmail settings, everything is pretty simple until you notice the Gmail IMAP settings and wonder why they are used. This article will explain Gmail IMAP settings and how to configure them.
Gmail IMAP is when you want to download your Gmail emails to an email client on your computer, such as Outlook. IMAP will download messages and sync your updates back to Gmail’s servers so everything stays consistent.
Connect Your Personal Email
Not everyone likes using the web version of Gmail. Some still prefer the old-fashioned way of using an email client such as Microsoft Outlook, iOS Mail or macOS Mail. Some may prefer to use old and outdated Mozilla Thunderbird. There are some bosses that force them to use it.
If you find yourself willingly or unwillingly in the email client camp, IMAP is here to make your life easier. It is easy to install, as you can see below.
Go to Gmail’s Forwarding and POP/IMAP page on desktop, scroll down until you reach the IMAP section and select Enable IMAP.
When you select Enable IMAP, new options appear but don’t change anything. Just select Save Changes.

The image below shows what the email client interface should look like when you fill in the appropriate options for Gmail IMAP.
It should also be noted that if you have two-factor authentication on your email account, providing your email address with your password will not work. In that case, you’ll need to create an app-specific password in the Security section of your Google Account.
The difference is where your emails are stored. IMAP messages are downloaded to your email client and connected to the email server (in this case, Gmail). So when you send a message with Outlook, the message is uploaded to Gmail’s servers to live in your Sent folder. On the other hand, POP automatically downloads your emails to your email client. It does not send new messages to the email server.
IMAP retrieves messages from your email server and downloads them for you. SMTP, meanwhile, is for sending emails from a sender (you) to another email server.
