How To Transfer A Domain From Godaddy To Squarespace – I am thinking of moving my domain from GoDaddy. I have been using GoDaddy services for years (including GoDaddy Pro). Two of my domains are due to renew this month. I thought this would be a good time to read the process. In this article, I will explain how to transfer my personal domain (this site) to Google Domains.
I’ve seen 3 or 4 different versions of the UI and menus over the years. It’s too difficult / talk / too much. To do the simplest things, you often need to go through several steps. And often important functions (such as DNS management) are buried in the menu.

Another problem is that GoDaddy is too expensive even for long-time customers. I understand, it is common to sell and promote. But I’m not here to buy something new every time I log into my account and go to “do something”.
Transferring Domain To Godaddy Or Other Registrar
Finally, the “GoDaddy Pro”. If I don’t go into detail, it’s a frustrating experience. Very slow, too many UI changes, and frequently switching between personal and client accounts. Plus, it’s great for earning points when you buy products for your customers. But I didn’t get any of those points (not that I cared, it’s crazy to get a reward and your account still shows 0 points.)!
Now, to ensure their UI, they have improved it a lot. However, it is not for me.
I have seen and heard about a few other Domain Registries over the years. But none of them attracted me to go through the trouble of returning.
As a Microsoft Azure customer, they have an easy domain registration service in the Azure Portal. But it is not a private domain registration service. It’s buried under the App Services menu (it makes sense). And I believe they work with GoDaddy for this service (nothing wrong with that. I know their SSL certificate is from GoDaddy).

But when I found Google Domains it was love at first sight! These are the reasons why Google is doing well. For me, privacy protection [built in], email [free] and add-ons (like a free site with Google sites or Blogger) are the most important things for me. And what might not be so obvious is, I use other Google services (email, auto, you name it!). How would it be to be able to use the same account and manage my domain too?!
To transfer your domain to Google, go to Google Domains. On the left side, you will see an option for “Transfer”.
Enter the domain you want to transfer and you will immediately see instructions on how to transfer the domain. The instructions are very clear. In my case, I had to open my domain first and then enter the authorization code.
To get the license key from GoDaddy, you need to go to their website and the link is at the bottom of the page:

After entering the authorization code in the domain transfer section of Google, you will be shown your current GoDaddy domain settings. In my case, I used a special DNS setting for this domain (second option). But as you can see, in the image below, you can copy your DNS records (even change them) during the transfer (hats off to the PM / person who suggested this feature. Really right)
And finally, don’t forget to choose your privacy, security and automatic updates! But you’re not done yet. Verify your email at GoDaddy. There is an email with instructions on what to do to speed up the domain transfer:
That’s it. You are done. The whole process took me 5 minutes. I was expecting some resistance from the GoDaddy side. But it went well (thanks to GoDaddy). As seen in the picture above. There are 3 things we will do at Godaddy. Disable the Registrar Lock (also known as Domain Lock), disable Privacy Protection if you have it and get a Gift Code.

So you tried to transfer the domain name from Godaddy as Registrar to Cloudflare to save at least $10 and maybe hundreds of dollars, but Godaddy gave you the authorization code. it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work and you need to try again.
The process is a little different, easier on Cloudflare’s side. And maybe it’s even more tedious on Godaddy’s part. Some old domains registered 10-20 years ago, may have old changes made by the old godaddy system overwritten. Moving them would probably require a fair level of support from the CEO or Danica Patrick.
So, if you move a domain from Godaddy (congratulations!), you may have to make a couple of attempts.
Google Domains Vs Godaddy For Domains
This is what you need to do on the Cloudflare side to make the second transfer attempt. A little different from the first transfer.
The first transfer attempt moves the domain name from the “Transfers” tab to the “Manage” tab under the Registrar option in Cloudflare.
At that point, they have your permission to try to transfer it first, and it failed (if you are now) so it speeds up and eliminates some of the steps that do not need to be repeated.
But if you don’t see it, when you log in to Cloudflare, go to the Registrar and look at the list of domains in the “Manage” side tab, the update date won’t be there and it might even say “Invalid date” . .

Do not forget to check that automatic updates are activated. You can always deactivate and allow the domain to expire at any time.
