Most people know Gmail for its clean and useful links, such as search engines and extensions. But you can use Gmail more: Gmail SMTP server.
How To Send Email Through Smtp Server
Gmail SMTP server allows you to send email from your Gmail account using other email, such as Outlook or Thunderbird. But more importantly, you can use Gmail’s SMTP server to send email from your WordPress site. Free!
Adjusting Email Notification Settings
This is a great way to make your WordPress site’s emails more reliable without spending money on an email service. Gmail allows you to send up to 500 emails per day, which is more than enough for most WordPress sites.
There are also some common (but not universal) Gmail SMTP settings that you will see when you try to configure it. Here’s how to answer them if you meet them:

As we explained above, the server address is smtp.gmail.com. You can sign in with your Gmail email address and your Google password.
What Is An Smtp Server?
It is right! You can do it. If you use another email client, such as Thunderbird or Outlook, you can use Gmail’s SMTP server details to still send email from your Gmail account.
However, remember that SMTP only sends email. If you want to receive email from your Gmail account in another email client, you must use POP3 or IMAP. You can find these settings by opening your Gmail account and going to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
Also yes! WordPress sends many simple business emails for things like password resets, reminders, etc. and you can send all emails using Gmail’s SMTP server.
With just one free Gmail account, you can send up to 500 emails per day, which is higher than the limits used by other free SMTP servers.
Enabling Smtp Settings For A Gmail Inbox
If you have a Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) account, Google will increase your limit even more, allowing you to send up to 2,000 emails a day. You can also send emails from your own domain name instead of your Gmail address. That is, you can send from [email protected] instead of [email protected]. To do this, you must also set up a Google Workspace MX record to link your Google Workspace account to your domain name.
Note: Technically the delivery limit is not “per day”. Instead, the restrictions apply for “rolling 24 hours”. For example, you cannot send 500 emails at 11:59 PM on Monday and then 500 emails at 12:01 AM on Tuesday.
It is right! You can use the SMTP server even if you have activated two-factor authentication in your Google account. However, you must create an app password so that the app can still connect.
However, if you want to use Gmail’s SMTP server to send your WordPress site’s email, we don’t recommend using this method. Instead, you should use the Gmail API method that we describe in the instructions below. This allows you to send emails using Gmail’s API instead of entering the SMTP server details, which also has the advantage of avoiding two-factor authentication issues.
Configure The Email Media Type
Now let’s get into how you can use Gmail’s SMTP server to send marketing messages for your WordPress site for free. This method works well and will improve the reliability of your website email by using a PHP mailer.
To set this up, you need to create a Google app so that you can connect to Gmail’s SMTP server via the API instead of just plugging in the SMTP context. There are many good steps to do this. This is a one-time installation only. That is, when you spend 30-60 minutes away from this setup, your site will continue to benefit from autopilot.
In addition to creating the Google app, you also need the help of the WordPress SMTP plugin. We will use the free Post SMTP Mailer / Email Log plugin, but the free WP Mail SMTP plugin is also another good option that supports the Gmail API.
Note – this tutorial is aimed at using a free Gmail account. However, you can follow a similar process to configure your website to send email from your Google Workspace (G Suite) account.
Send Email Using Sendgrid In Azure Sql
To get started, you need to install and activate the free Post SMTP Mailer / Email Log plugin from WordPress.org. This is what allows you to configure your WordPress site to send email via the Gmail API / SMTP server.
Once you’ve activated the plugin, go to the Mail SMTP tab in your WordPress dashboard and click the View All Settings link under the big Start Wizard button.
Then go to the Messages tab and enter your “from” email address and your name. You can use your Gmail address as the “from” email, or you can use another email address if you prefer.
Then go back to the Account tab and select Gmail API from the Type drop-down menu. When you select this, you should see some additional options in the Authentication box below. Keep this page open because you need Allow JavaScript History and Allow URI Content Changes in the next step:
How To Use Google’s Free Smtp Server
Now you need to create a Google app. This is what allows your WordPress site to send email securely through the Gmail API. Again, this is the hardest part of this process. However, just click a few buttons and we’ll provide all the steps/pictures you need to do it.
To get started, open a new tab and copy this URL to the Google Developers Console. There you have to create a new project. If this is your first time logging into the developer console, Google will ask you to create your first project. Or, if you already have some projects, you can create a new one by clicking the drop-down menu in the left corner (marked with [1] in the screenshot below).
You should now be in a connection to the Gmail API. Click the button to create a certificate:
Now Google will tell you that you need to set the recommended screen. This is the same type of permission screen you see when you use Google to register/login to a website.
Configure Third Party Smtp For Outbound Emails
You need to do this to comply with Google’s rules, but you don’t need to worry about the information you enter because you’re only using this for your own WordPress site.
This should open a new tab where you can configure the OAuth authorization screen (keep the old browser tab valid as you will have to go back to it a second time). In user mode, select External. Then click Create:
On the next screen, enter the main information for your website. Again – you don’t have to worry about what you put here because you are the only person who will see this information.
Now go back to the tab that contains the credentials to add to your project interface and enter the following information:
Send Emails Through Your Own Smtp Server
Once you’ve added everything, click Update. After that, the Update button should change to Create OAuth User ID – click that to complete the process, then click Finish.

When you click Finish, you should see a section for the OAuth 2.0 Client ID in the Certificates tab of your project (which should be open after you click Finish).
To complete the setup, go back to the Post SMTP Mailer / Email Log settings in your WordPress dashboard and paste the Client ID and Client Secret from the previous step. After that, be sure to save your changes:
Bizagi Studio > Process Wizard > Business Rules > Defining Notifications > Email Server Configuration > Using An Smtp Server
Clicking the link will open the normal Google authorization process (again, just like you signed up for the site with a Google login). But since you don’t submit your app to Google for review, Google will show you a warning that “This app is not approved”.
Since this is your own app, you can ignore the notifications. Click the option to show advanced location and then click the Go to “yourwebsite.com” link (negative) to continue the authorization process:
Now you will go through the usual process. Make sure to select the option to allow your WordPress site to access your Gmail account. It needs these permissions to send email through Gmail’s SMTP server.
To make sure everything works, Post SMTP Mailer / Email Log includes an option to send a test email. You can access this from the main page:
How Using Gmail’s
Your WordPress site will now send all of its emails using Gmail’s SMTP server. You can confirm that this is happening by going to Mail SMTP → Email Log. This will list all the emails your site sends (including the default if the plugin encounters a problem):
