Note: Unlike using VPN Enabler for Mojave (which works easily with Apple’s built-in VPN client in Network Preferences), you need the app to set up an OpenVPN client.

Enter the domain name (VPN Hostname field) of the machine where you want to run the OpenVPN Enabler. A domain name that should be publicly accessible from the Internet. Then click the Suggest IP Address button. Make any custom changes to the IP address fields, if needed. Finally, click the Start OpenVPN button and you’re done. You have OpenVPN Server (version 2.5.0) running on your Mac.
After pressing the Start OpenVPN button, you will see that a profile called Client-1 is automatically created. Use this profile to configure the OpenVPN client.
Export this profile (click its name and the activation button) and copy it to the OpenVPN client to establish the client-server connection. You can use the same profile for any number of clients (although it’s not secure, but let’s start with that because it’s easy).
Copy this profile to a Mac or iOS device, either via AirDrop or via email or any other method.

Note: OpenVPN Enabler can also export the .ovpn file, alongside the .mobileconfig file, to the selected directory. You can use this .ovpn file with any OpenVPN client.
A. If the client is an iOS device, except for one extra step, connecting to the OpenVPN server from an iOS device is pretty much the same as we did with the old Apple Mojave built-in VPN server. Copy the above file to your iOS device and put it in Settings. An additional step is that we need an app on an iOS device. For iOS, I didn’t write any OpenVPN client app because the one provided by OpenVPN is enough. Download from their website. B. If the client is a Mac, we now need an application. The OpenVPN app for macOS is very Windows-centric. So I wrote a Mac OpenVPN client and included it in the same application as the enabling server. Use the same OpenVPN Enabler application on the target Mac client, but use the Client tab. Drag the sent mobile configuration file to the “source” below the Start OpenVPN Client button. When the file is dropped on the source, the OpenVPN client application removes the client parameters from the profile and stops the VPN client configuration. Then you are ready to press the Start OpenVPN Client button.
Without VPN enabled, it will show your “real” IP address – the network your Mac or iOS device is connected to. But with VPN enabled, it shows the IP address of the OpenVPN server. So, on both the OpenVPN server machine and the client, do the same thing: load checkip.dyndns.com. Compare the returned IP addresses; if they are the same, you have successfully reconnected to your VPN.

You can also try pinging other machines on your local network to your VPN server. Ping using the private IP address on which the VPN server is enabled. (I can reach other machines on my remote local network via their IP address, and I can access them via file sharing and ssh etc, but I can’t reach my VPN server machine with their ip address I can only reach it with 10.8 address 0.1 is blocked by VPN (so still a lot to learn).
You can unlock OpenVPN Enabler using the last menu item in the Help menu. It will close the OpenVPN daemon, if it is running, and remove all files installed by OpenVPN Enabler (in /usr/local/cutedge/openvpn).
