After that failure he went to the next step: soaking the pan in equal parts vinegar and water. My pan was small enough to fit in the sink, so that’s where I soaked. I filled in enough water and vinegar to cover the entire pot. I used 9 cups of water and 9 cups of vinegar. My big pot would require at least one big bottle of vinegar because it wouldn’t fit in my sink.
Side note- I know I also put a plant in my soaking solution, but I assure you this is a reflection of my money tree accentuating the one in the picture.
A rusty pan can be soaked in a vinegar/water solution for 1-8 hours, but should be checked every hour to see if the rust comes off easily or comes off. Once the rust starts to come off, if the pan is still exposed to vinegar, it will damage the cast iron beyond repair.
I was so impatient that I tried to scrape off some of the rust with my fingernail while it soaked for 20 minutes, revealing a silver pan underneath (here I thought my very rusty pan would take the full 8 hours) !
