Unfortunately, migrating to entrenched collaborative environments like Google Workspace is often not a simple task, and even good managers find themselves in the middle of a migration when they trust marketing.
Many tools sell the ability to transfer Google Drive and Google Shared Drive licenses. The seller may make documentation available to you before you buy, and they may promise 24-hour support. That’s all well and good, but are you willing to risk your career without trying? I will not do it! I highly recommend blocking out your day, grabbing a cup of coffee, and doing a deep dive into whatever migration tool you plan to use to transfer documents.
Google Workspace Migration For Microsoft Exchange
Google Drive and Microsoft SharePoint/OneDrive are designed differently and therefore handle permissions differently. By default, Google has more adaptive collaboration features that can lead to situations that work naturally in the source but don’t necessarily translate well (or at all) to the target. Migration tools need to handle this situation somehow, and it’s important to understand how SharePoint/OneDrive permissions are taken care of. One-to-one sharing permissions are usually easily handled by most tools, but I highly recommend a thorough test of anything more complex than that.
Migrationwiz Is The Industry Leading Tool To Migrate To Google Workspace
Google Workspace has the concept of domain alias and Microsoft 365 does not. If you’re using a domain alias with Google and those alias email addresses are important to you, you’ll need to manually add all the alias email addresses in each mailbox and migrated group. For organizations using multiple domain aliases, this can quickly add up to thousands of alias email addresses, so be prepared to break out Excel and learn remote PowerShell to import them into Exchange Online.
Google pioneered the concept of collaborative group. Microsoft quickly copied the concept and released Unified Groups (aka Microsoft 365 Groups) as a platform for Microsoft Teams. Unfortunately, the two platforms are built differently enough that mapping Google Group settings to unified groups/teams requires a close understanding of both environments (and creative interpretation of specific permissions).
I don’t know of any tool that takes into account group settings (post settings, mail flow, etc.), so manual transfer is up to the admin. Some tools control owner/member permissions, but these permissions are managed as part of the membership transition and usually require their own cleanup and translation efforts. I strongly suggest that you pre-assess your environment for important group features so that you can determine which settings and permissions may need special attention. For these reasons, many organizations decide to start from scratch with groups and teams.
Additionally, as of this writing, only one tool offers Google Group post history migration due to Google API limitations. This is a slow, manual process performed by the seller (not the customer) that requires expensive consulting hours. If you need to migrate Google Group post history, plan ahead and plan for multiple limitations compared to traditional workloads like mail and documents.
Microsoft Office 365
As of this writing, there is no migration path from Google Forms to Microsoft Forms. Of course, raw data can be exported/imported in many formats, but web forms used by end users to submit data are not portable. If Google Forms is mission critical, get ahead of it and start redeveloping them as Microsoft Forms.
SaaS solutions such as Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 provide organizations with scalable and cost-effective software suites to increase end-user productivity. Once a productivity suite is deployed, the next natural step is to seamlessly add third-party applications and protocols to the mix. Moving these integrations from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 may not be easy.
It is common for a deployed SMB to have at least SSO, MFA, MDM, SIEM, filtering, archiving, and CRM. Organizations with an open and agile infrastructure approach often end up with “application sprawl” and “shadow IT” to use before moving forward. Proprietary code and apps that write custom data (document metadata, Google Apps script, calendar apps, etc.) are unlikely to be supported in Microsoft 365, but your employees can rely on them for their day-to-day work. All this must be done ad hoc and with its own planning on a parallel timeline. I suggest dedicating resources in your migration plan to thoroughly audit these.
Not all organizations will have the above considerations, but don’t be surprised! When in doubt, navigate through all the links in the admin portal and read the guide to understand what it all means so you don’t get left behind on outage day. Planning ahead and testing your migration tools will go a long way in ensuring a smooth transition for end users.

Lack of familiarity: Having said that, remember that Office 365 has nurtured companies since childhood, and losing that familiar environment requires hand-holding.
Reduced features: Microsoft 365 has an arsenal of apps, some of which have nothing to do with G Suite. In some cases, third-party tools may be required to fill in the gaps.

Access your Admin Exchange Center, select Permissions, then Admin Roles, and click + to add a new one.
Name it and then add two roles: ApplicationImpersonation and ViewOnly-Configuration. Save this role and go to User roles to add your user.
In G Suite, create target users manually or a CSV file. Upload with user data. A template is provided in your admin console. Mailboxes, calendars, and contacts must be moved separately. The procedure is the same for all three cases.
Let’s start with email – select Email. Fill in some fields, such as the transfer source, which is Microsoft Exchange 365, then the connection protocol, which you can choose to select automatically (recommended). Finally, enter your domain in the URL field and your transfer user’s email in the Role account field.
