Gmail IMAP is when you want to upload your Gmail messages to an email client on your computer, such as Outlook. IMAP downloads messages and syncs changes to Gmail’s servers so everything stays the same.

Add Your Gmail Account To Outlook Using Imap

Not everyone likes using the web version of Gmail. Some still prefer the old fashioned way of using email clients like Microsoft Outlook, iOS Mail or macOS Mail. Some may even like to use the outdated and now deprecated Mozilla Thunderbird. Others have employers who force them to use it.

Whether or not you find yourself in the email client camp, IMAP is here to make your life easier. As you can see below, the setup is very easy.

Go to Gmail’s Forwarding and POP/IMAP page on the desktop, go to the IMAP settings section, and select Enable IMAP.

After you select Enable IMAP, new options will appear, but you won’t change any of them. Just select Save Changes.

The screenshot below shows what the email client configuration screen should look like when you’ve filled in the correct Gmail IMAP settings.

It’s also important to note that if you have two-factor authentication enabled on your email account, giving your email client your password won’t work. In this case, you’ll need to create an app-specific password in the security section of your Google Account.

The difference is where your emails are stored. IMAP messages are downloaded to your local email client and synced with the email server (in this case, Gmail). So if you send a message using Outlook, that message is uploaded to Gmail’s servers to sit in your Sent folder. POP, on the other hand, only downloads copies of your email to your local email client. It does not send new messages to the mail server.

IMAP receives messages from your email server and uploads them to you. SMTP, on the other hand, is designed to send email messages from the sender (you) to another email server.
