ARLINGTON, Va. – 3,000 more soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division are moving to Europe, and Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III is bringing back 160 Florida National Guard soldiers who are training Ukraine’s military in outside the country.

The moves come in light of new signs of Russia’s escalation on its border with Ukraine, said Jake Sullivan, President Joe Biden’s national security adviser. Sullivan spoke at the White House on February 11.

“As we said before, we have a window when the attack will start at any time if [Russian President] Vladimir Putin decides to order it,” he said. Sullivan said another attack on Ukraine – Russia invaded the country in 2014 and annexed Crimea – could happen at any time.
Sullivan said America is ready no matter what Putin decides. The United States will negotiate if the Russian leader chooses, or “we are prepared to respond directly with these friends and colleagues if Russia chooses to take military action,” he said.
Responding to a Russian attack would include heavy economic sanctions, with similar measures imposed by the European Union, Britain, Canada and other countries, Sullivan said. “It will also include changes to the position of NATO and US forces on NATO’s eastern flank, and will include continued support for Ukraine,” he said.
160 members of the Florida National Guard have been sent to Ukraine since the end of November, training and educating and training the Ukrainian military. Soldiers assigned to the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team are part of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine.

“They are leaving Ukraine and will return to other places in Europe,” said Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby in a statement written on February 12. The main thing in mind – and informed by the State Department’s guidance of US personnel in Ukraine. “
A top commander has confirmed that 3,000 additional soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, will deploy to Europe. “This second batch of air forces to Poland will join the first batch of 1,700 troops and critical assets that Secretary Austin ordered there on February 2,” said the senior commander, speaking measured later. “Nearly two-thirds of this first unit arrived. They were led by Major General Christopher Donahue.”
The deployment of 300 members of the 18th Airborne Corps to Germany has been completed, the official said. It is led by Lieutenant General Michael Kurilla.
“All told, these 5,000 workers are very stable and flexible enough to perform multiple missions,” the official said. “They are being sent to comfort our NATO partners, to prevent attacks on NATO’s eastern flank, to train with host nation forces, and to provide a wide range of capabilities. They will report to Air Force One. Gen. Tod Wolters, commander of the US. European Command.”

Diplomacy continues. Biden spoke with Putin on February 12. A statement from the White House said Biden about the cost of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “President Biden knows that if Russia continues to attack Ukraine, the United States, along with our allies and partners, will respond directly and impose swift and severe consequences on Russian officials,” the report said. “President Biden reiterated that Russia’s new aggression in Ukraine will increase human suffering and undermine Russia’s position. Prepare for other scenarios.”
On February 11, Biden attended a meeting with the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Poland, Romania, the Secretary General of NATO and the presidents of the EU.
“We’ve had an amazing level of unity and common ground – from the general design to the technical details,” Sullivan said. “Whatever happens, the alliance of the West is more than years. NATO is strengthened. As the coronavirus continues to spread across the United States, you may be able to see members of the National Guard coming to your city.
From California to New York, Wisconsin to Texas, the National Guard is working in every state and territory of the US to help local governments deal with the increase in Covid-19 cases.

If you know a member of the National Guard, it can be understood if you do a double take: Seeing people in military uniforms driving large armored vehicles and walking around your neighborhood can can be annoying at first glance. But if the National Guard is working near you, it means that the governor of your state thinks it would be best for one of your neighbors to help civil agencies respond to the crisis.
So, if you’re worried about martial law coming, the good news is that it won’t happen where you live or anywhere else in America. Members of the National Guard “are our fellow citizens, not Imperial Stormtroopers,” said Kori Schake, an expert on civil-military relations at the American Enterprise Institute think tank in Washington.
The work of members of the National Guard is not scary. Among other things, they clean public spaces, donate food and help administer drive-through tests for Covid-19, the name given to the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

They work under the authority of the governor of the state and provide workers, vehicles and other tools for the work. In some cases, patrol members may perform some law enforcement duties, but this is under the direction of the local police.
In addition, the National Guard will help fill the gaps identified by civilian leaders, not to implement military takeovers. “The National Guard is called in when local resources are insufficient to meet the need,” said Lindsay Cohn, a Naval War College specialist with the National Guard.

Air Force Gen. Joseph Lengyel, head of the National Guard, told reporters on March 19 why his army is being called to help during the coronavirus pandemic.

“With Covid-19, we have like 54 hurricanes in every state, territory and the District of Columbia,” he said. “When disaster strikes, we don’t have to move from one source. We pack lunch, we go to work, because we are there in the communities where these events are happening. We live in then we can respond quickly.”
It’s an important point to understand: The National Guard of a state is made up of people from that state. Farmers, coal miners, doctors, lawyers, teachers, postal workers, store clerks and more. Sometimes, on the weekend, they practice with their equipment. Most of the time, people are doing their daily work.
“The National Guard comes from the community and knows the community,” said Christine Wormuth, the Pentagon’s senior director from 2014 to 2016 and now at the RAND Corporation.

Big Moments: Guard Leader Presides Over Busy Year, Reorganization
When there is a crisis, like the coronavirus, the governor mobilizes the National Guard of the state to help the civil services in their response. In other words, the governor is the one who takes care of them when they are called – so the elected leader is always in charge, not the military.
